Description
In the wake of World War I, some radical labor unions and communists agitated for a socialist revolution in the United States. In addition to labor strikes, some activists resorted to violent measures, such as sending bombs to prominent officials. Revolutionaries sent one such bomb to Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer, though it exploded harmlessly on his doorstep. In response, Palmer conducted massive arrests of suspected "Bolsheviks" in 33 U.S. cities. Although police arrested more than 4,000 supposed anarchists, they only confiscated three pistols and recovered no bombs. Copyright The WPA Film Library.
