The rapid expansion of computer technology during the 1950s and 1960s led to many commercial applications. IBM, which had previously worked to build computers with assistance from the U.S. Department of Defense, soon became the world's leading computer company. The creation of punch card and other memory systems allowed businesses to consolidate and maintain important information.
