Description
Despite the huge need for manpower during World War II, U.S. military units officially remained segregated throughout the war. African-American soldiers who fought in the war were assigned to segregated squadrons, and they generally did not fight alongside their white counterparts. One notable exception, however, was the Battle of the Bulge, in which the extreme circumstances led military leaders to integrate approximately 2,500 African-American troops.
