Description
After the People's Republic of China annexed Tibet in 1949, it began a system of harsh rule that outlawed the practice of the national religion, Lamaism. Tibet rebelled against communist rule between 1958 and 1959. China responded by sending additional troops into the country and the Dalai Lama, the country's religious leader, was forced to flee into exile in India.
