In 1937 Ireland, Mary Margaret Joyce, nicknamed Peg, is born to an unwed mother living in a penal home. When her mother is discharged, she's forced to leave Peg behind. Peg spends time with an uncaring foster family and then is sent to an industrial school where she learns silence, prayers, and hard work from the nuns there. Then at age thirteen Peg tracks down her birth mother and the tension between them mounts as Peg considers leaving for America....
