Description
The British seaside holiday gained popularity during the Victorian era, when railroads made travel to the coast more accessible. Although men and women were prohibited from bathing together until 1901, by the 1950s, "bathing beauty" contests were standard fare in most resort towns. In such contests, male judges ranked swimsuit-clad women based on their physical characteristics.
