Description
While landing in Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937, the German zeppelin Hindenburg burst into flames. A large crowd had gathered to witness the landing of the world's largest rigid airship, which was also seen as a symbol of Nazi propaganda. Investigation determined that atmospheric electricity had ignited flammable hydrogen gas leaking from the airship's balloon.
