Description
Abstract: Thirty interviews conducted with Nashville elders, recalling in autobiographical form their major life events and experiences. Most are audio recordings although a few may exist only as full or partial transcripts. Interviews were conducted as part of the statewide initiative known as Homecoming '86, a celebration of local communities and their history. Planning documents for the oral history project are also part of the collection.
Description
Scope and content: Series I. Interviews. Topics discussed include: childhood, family, schooling, higher education, courtship and marriage, careers, teaching, churches and religious life, farming, chores, economic conditions, wartime conditions (particularly on the homefront during World War I), politicians, transportation, railroads, entertainment, music, restaurants, entrepreneurship and businesses, rural and city life, and many other subjects. Several interviewees discuss music in various forms: including home life and personal musical instruments and singing; classical music; opera; bluegrass; religious hymns and church music; musical education, training, and teachers; WSM and the Grand Ole Opry; the Nashville Symphony; and related subjects. African American narrators recall starting businesses; working as domestic help for white families; race relations; education; Fisk University and Meharry Medical College; segregation; religion; life in both rural and urban settings; and occasionally, recollections about enslaved family members. A few female narrators talk about women's activism, particularly in the political sphere in the mid to late 20th century. Notable events recalled by some of the narrators include: the shooting of Edward Ward Carmack by Robin Cooper; the East Nashville fire of 1916; the Dutchman’s Curve train wreck in 1918; and the bursting of the 8th Avenue Reservoir. Nearly all interviews have topical indexes to the recording; almost none have transcripts.
Description
Series II. Project Planning Files include various planning documents, such as correspondence; identification of potential interviewees and interviewers; forms; question lists; and "Golden Days: An Oral History Guide" produced by Dr. Richard Blaustein of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services at East Tennessee State University, for statewide use for local Homecoming '86 projects.

Biographical or Historical Data
Homecoming '86 was a statewide initiative in Tennessee to celebrate communities in the state. The project was first announced by Governor Lamar Alexander in his inauguration speech on Jan. 13, 1983. The Nashville Heritage Project, under the direction of Paul Clements, participated in Homecoming '86 celebrations in Nashville by recording oral histories with Nashville's elders. Emphasis was upon those age 90 (born in 1896, the year of Tennessee's centennial) or older, who had lived in Davidson County for many years. The Tennessean newspaper was also a partner in the project, creating a series of regular feature articles based upon the interviews.
