At age 11, Maddux began studying ballet under Albertine Maxwell. Maddux also spent five summers at Albertine's Summer Dance Workshop in Bar Harbor, Me., studying ballet, Spanish, and East Indian or Hindu dancing. Maddux performed with the Nashville Ballet Society and at the Southeast Regional Ballet Festival. After high school graduation, she immediately moved to New York City to further her studies at Joffrey Ballet School. Some of the dance companies she performed with included: Ethnic Dance Arts; Bhaskar's Dances of India; Los Solera; and Bailes Espanoles. In 1979, at age 25, Maddux was forced to suddenly end her dance career due to physical restrictions and under doctor's orders.
Biographical or Historical Data
Maddux began to suffer from depression and sought medical treatment, which alleviated her depression for several years. Meanwhile, she began working with a Nashville securities firm, and then relocated to Sarasota, Fla. Her depression returned in 1987, and she again sought medical treatment, but this time the treatments were less successful. She moved back to Nashville to seek support from her family, and in 1993 Dr. William Petrie diagnosed her with bipolar disorder after a sudden manic attack.
