Biographical or Historical Data
The Optimistic Study Club was founded in 1918 by Millie E. Hale (Mrs. J. H. Hale) who served as president for many years. Composed of leading African-American women in Nashville, the purpose of the club at its founding was for "self-improvement and entertainment." By the mid-twentieth century, the club also made numerous contributions to local charitable organizations, and took on projects "designed to bring about better social and econmic changes" for "community improvement." The 1996 by-laws defined the purpose of the club as being for "self-improvement, to provide a stimulus of growth through the exchange of ideas and experiences." The number of members were limited to eighteen, and new members were approved by a vote of the current membership. The motto of the club is: "Looking on the bright side."
