Description
On its publication in 1919, Virginia Woolf's second book was largely dismissed as "traditional," a Victorian novel that plays like Shakespearean comedy. We follow the romantic tribulations of two friends, Katharine Hilbery and Mary Datchet, before finally arriving at two engagements. But subtly and presciently, these dramas play out against the backdrop of the first faltering steps of the women's suffrage movement. Ultimately, Woolf's novel is a subversive challenge to the male literary establishment of the Edwardian age that undercuts the unequal gender dialectic on which their plots depend --Provided by publisher.
