Description
One series of short interviews with five individuals concerning the Hermitage Hotel, recorded in 1977, probably just before the building was shuttered by codes enforcement, due to its deteriorating condition. Most individuals talk about celebrity visits, or provide a few details about furniture and decor, renovations and remodeling, or describe in a general way, parties, dances, and musical performers such as Dinah Shore or Francis Craig. Interviewees include: W. D. Brown, describing his work as a barber at the hotel barbershop, cutting celebrities' hair, and the difficulty Eleanor Roosevelt had when she insisted her African American guests be treated in an equal manner at the hotel; Catherine Redman, a hotel resident; Gladys Burton, desk clerk, who tells about the uniforms of bell boys; Monsignor Williams recalling the banquet to mark the centennial of St. Mary's Catholic Church in 1947. Mabel Louthan, a desk clerk, provides more detail and unusual stories than anyone else, telling about the filming of the Micky Spillane movie, "Delta Factor," a performing pig, and the discovery of a dead man in the hotel lobby. Interviews were digitized as a single track bearing the digital filename identifier PPNHermitagH. Transcripts are available for all Hermitage Hotel interviews.
Description
Mrs. Lillie May (Mrs. A.M.) Burton tells about the Burton family home, Seven Hills (interview recorded in 1976). John C. Hull tells about his work and experiences as a school principal at Cameron High School in the 1950s (interview recorded in 1974). Katie Jenkins, born in 1889, was a daughter of former slaves. In this 1982 interview, she describes her family's experiences under slavery and after freedom, and mentions several members of the Davis family, (probably her relatives). Index available. John Kiser is teaching a history class, which was audio-recorded in 1983. Lastly, Mrs. Anne Quick tells about the South Branch of the Nashville Public Library, (recorded in 1974).

Biographical or Historical Data
In 1968 the Historic Sites Federation of Tennessee was formed. The name was changed to Historic Nashville, Inc. in 1974. Historic Nashville, Inc. (HNI) was organized as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a stated purpose to document and preserve the cultural, historical, and architectural heritage of Nashville. This group was instrumental in saving Union Station, the Ryman Auditorium, and many other historic buildings. In 1970s and 1980s, they undertook a number of oral history projects, many of which were donated to the Special Collections Division of the Nashville Public Library.
Biographical or Historical Data
The origin of the People and Places oral history project is not known. It may be that this collection was established to serve as a "catch-all" function, for those interviews that did not readily fit into other HNI oral history collections. Interviews in this collection were created between 1974 and 1983. It is known that they were part of library holdings sometime prior to the year 2000, and they were likely acquired shortly after they were recorded. No release forms or administrative records exist to provide provenance or clarify rights issues.
