Two oversize calendars from1923 are particularly fragile. Please handle with extreme care.
Description
Scope and content: A variety of calendars, from 1923 to 2000, serving primarily as compilations of historical data and timelines, marking anniversaries of particular events; or as a compiled listing of various charitable and social events occurring in Nashville during a particular year. A few other calendars were produced for the purposes of advertising businesses, raising money for charity, or other activities. Several of the calendars also include advertisements for local businesses, and are illustrated by artwork from local artists, or photography of local scenes.
Description
Calendars of a historical nature include: Bellevue Bicentennial (1995-1996); Tennessee Maneuvers during World War II (produced by Tennessee Wars Commission, 1994); Metro Planning Department (initiatives underway or planned, in the form of an annual report for the year 2000); Civil War commemorative items such as date books from 1959 and 1960, and a Centennial calendar for 1961, as well as two calendars from Save the Franklin Battlefield, 1999 and 2000; and two country music calendars with numerous historical dates and anniversaries noted, 1980 and 2000.
Description
Social events calendars include many produced by the Junior Board of Crittenton Services (formerly the Florence Crittenton Home) from 1972 to 1998, which include numerous events of all varieties for the year, with illustrations of local landmarks, some advertisements from local businesses, and sometimes including information about the mission of Crittenton Services (to prevent teen pregnancy and to educate and support teen parents) or statistics related to their work. One other social event calendar was produced and distributed by Nfocus magazine (1997-1998).
Description
A few other calendars are oversized: one produced in 1980 to call attention to the attempt to rescue and restore Nashville's Union Station, illustrated with black and white photographs by John Netherton; and two visually impressive chromolithographed and embossed cardstock calendars from 1923 advertising local businesses: Paris Hatters and Shoe Shine Parlor, located at 333 Union Street and George's No. 2 Shoe Shine Parlor, 625 Church Street. These are particularly noteworthy for their unique format and artistry, even though they were mass-produced items, designed to have a customizable insert.
