Notes

Description
A first-hand look at the growing phenomenon of gated retirement communities where no children are allowed. The author's journey begins when his next-door-neighbors suddenly pick up and move to a retirement community called The Villages, the largest gated retirement community in the world. It is a city of nearly 100,000 (and growing) and the exclusion of children is one of the foundations of the development. The Villages is merely one of a rapidly growing number of age-segregated communities in the Western world. Popularized by Sun City in Arizona, they began as a refuge for economical retirees, but they have exploded in popularity and importance. It is estimated that more than twelve million people will soon live behind gates that exclude children. The author also journeys to the Arizona desert, speaks with experts, and examines the implications of millions of Americans living in legally segregated communities.
