Description
Abstract: Research papers compiled by Hutchison on Nashville architects and men's clubs at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and documents relating to Hutchison's involvement and leadership at Belle Meade Country Club in the early 1970s, especially its golf course.
Description
Scope and content: Series I. Research files consist predominently of photocopies and hand-written notes relating to architects Herman Justi and W. C. Smith, especially Smith's involvement with the design of the Parthenon at the Tennessee Centennial and his bid for work on the Tennessee State Penitentiary; and information about the early years of the Old Oak Club, the Round Table, Justi's involvement with both of these groups, and the Centennial Club, including a profile of Mrs. J. Hill (Elizabeth) Eakin. Most materials focus on the time period of the late 1880s to early 1910s.
Description
Series II. Belle Meade Country Club reflects Hutchison's involvement as a member of the board, member of the nominating committee, and chair of the long-range planning committee in the early 1970s, with emphasis on expansion and acquisition efforts to obtain parcels of nearby land, as well as improvements to the golf course. Materials include notes, correspondence, bids, and related items, as well as a few photographs of golf pros Henry Lindner (1954-1958) and Johnny Morris (1947-1954). Oversize plans show the golf course and its irrigation (1965); property owners along West Tyne Dr. near Belle Meade Blvd., including outlines of building footprints (1969) and additions to the loggia at the country club (1964).
