The interview consists of sound recordings in two formats: 1 original audio cassettes recorded in 1986 and a set of 3 data CDs containing MP3 files (a master, a copy master, and a use copy). The original cassette was digitized during a conversion project in 2006.

Description
Scope and content: An oral history interview with James H. Crowder, conducted on the 28 Aug. 1986 by Reavis Mitchell as part of the Homecoming '86 oral history project. Topics discussed during the interview include Crowder's business (Crowder Brothers Barber Shop) and its various locations over time; his family and childhood; attending school; learning to be a barber and working as a shoe shine boy; life in Nashville, including segregation; and changing hairstyles.

Biographical or Historical Data
Born in Wilson County, Tenn., in April 1908, James H. Crowder's family moved to Nashville while he was still a young boy. He attended Bellevue School and Pearl High School. He began working at his father's barber shop as a shoeshine boy at age 10, and he learned barbering from his father, who also ran a barber school. Crowder quit Pearl High School before graduation to begin his career, and after his marriage, he lived on Meharry Boulevard and ran his barbership on Cedar Street (now Charlotte Avenue). He moved his shop to Fourth Avenue, and then, in 1954, to Jefferson Street, to a building designed by the McKissack architectural firm. Crowder died on 16 Oct. 1997 in Chicago and is buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Nashville, Tenn.
