Description
Scope and content: Originally begun in 1937, and completed in 1962, John B. Beckett's "Empty Honors" is a fictional account of a feud between the Donnovan and Roy families in the early settlement period of Tennessee, and along the way includes "thumb-nail sketches of many renown people of Tennessee, war heroes, and legends" and poems. The typescript is divided into four parts, and an outline of each part is included at the beginning of the typescript. Topics include: the early Cumberland settlements; Andrew Jackson; Rachel Jackson; slavery; Indians; Sam Houston; Timothy Demonbreun; the Hermitage; Baptists and Church of Christ; Bell Witch; the Alamo; Matthew Fontaine Maury; Chucalissa; Reelfoot Lake; the Melungeons; Daniel Boone; Davy Crockett; David Glasgow Farragut; Sam Davis; the Civil War; Felix Zollicoffer; the fall of Nashville; and other similar subjects. The typescript has 32 chapters and numbers 597 pages.
