Description
Scope and content: Day book of accounts (1849-1853) of individuals in Franklin, Tenn. Some persons have connections or business dealings in Nashville and Pulaski. Book is attributed in a later hand to Capt. Tom Henderson of Franklin, Tenn. Entries use double entry bookkeeping, and refer to stocks, bonds, and dividends; estate settlements; boarders and renters; real estate deals; contributions to Christian religious organizations and churches; hiring of slaves; collection or payment of debts; and a variety of other personal expenses. At the back of the volume are a few cake or bread recipes, as well as entries for purchases of milk and butter.

Individuals who are frequently mentioned in the book include William Park, who often runs errands and collects debts; Anna Crockett and Samuel Crockett.

No additional identifying information has been located about Captain Tom Henderson of Franklin, Tenn. He has not been found on the 1850 Federal census, and it is not evident from the day book what his occupation was. However, he was evidently quite wealthy. In 1852, he had assets of $40,288 and debts of $2305.

William Park, age 61, is listed as a merchant in the Ninth Civil District of Williamson County, Tenn. in the 1850 Federal census. Living in his household are Samuel Crockett, age 74, a physician, and Anna Crockett, age 26. No further information is known about these individuals, but it is assumed that they are the persons mentioned in the ledger book.
