Description
Scope and content: This collection provides basic information about a number of pre-1950 Tennessee radio stations and general radio broadcasting history, with emphasis on the 1920s and 1930s, as compiled by William D. Jackson. Series I includes summaries of individual radio station histories, mostly provided by the Broadcast Pro-file company of Hollywood, Calif. Some individual folders may have additional materials including notes, correspondence, or other items. Individual folders in Series I are arranged in chronological order according to date of license. Researchers are advised that the date appearing on the folders in Series I does not indicate the date of materials within. Series II consists of research materials compiled by Jackson concerning early radio broadcasting, especially legislation and regulation. There are also sizable amounts of material about WSM, John H. "Jack" DeWitt, and Ewin L. Davis and a small amount of material about James D. Vaughn. There are also photocopies of materials from Radio Annual the Variety Radio Directory spanning 1937-1951 and NAB Reports, 1934-1937, put out by the National Association of Broadcasters. Additional subjects include rural and farm radio, commercial radio, early religious and church broadcasting, the Davis Amendment, the Federal Communications Commission, the Federal Trade Commission, early FM radio, and the general business of broadcasting. Series III contains issues and excerpts from Journalism History, Broadcast Pioneers Library newsletters, and other articles, periodicals, and catalogs of reproductions of old radio broadcasts. Series IV consists of six audiocassette tapes produced by Radio Yesteryear.
