Description
Scope and content: Original typescript or manuscript letters written and submitted to the editor of the Nashville Banner newspaper from Jan. 1992 to Jan. 1993 by members of the general public, public figures, and Nashville Banner readers, concerning a wide variety of topics. Some of the letters may have been published in the Banner's editorial pages, although many likely were not.
Description
Subjects vary considerably. Some subjects are seasonal or unique to certain times of the year, such as sports and elections. Some letters provide local reaction to national events, such as the Rodney King trial. Other subjects are ongoing, reflecting issues of constant concern, such as taxes and education. Numerous letters concern unique local issues, such as the restoration of the Parthenon and the merger of General Hospital and Meharry Hospital. Taken as a whole, the collection provides a one-year snapshot of issues that were important to Nashvillians and residents of Middle Tennessee, and their positions on these issues.
