Description
Scope and content: The collection consists of two scrapbooks and a few additional unbound pages of newspaper clippings compiled by Edwin A. Price, who served as Nashville's City Attorney (circa late 1890s-circa 1902) and later as the Attorney General for Davidson County (circa 1902-circa 1906). The bound volumes, spanning January 6, 1899, through October 6, 1899, include numerous articles about the legal battles between railroads and streetcar companies pertaining to franchises and rights of way, city government, the mayoral campaign and election of 1899, capitalism, gas companies, and related civic topics. Includes a few newspaper articles about the American politicians William Jennings Bryan and Robert G. Ingersoll.

The unbound materials consist of Nashville newspaper reports of the Tom Cox murder trial, spanning the dates circa December 10, 1903, through march 20, 1904, concerning the pistol duel between Tom Cox and Patrolman Ben Dowell that occurred in Nashville, Tennessee.

Biographical or Historical Data
Edwin A. Price (1860-1933) was born in Alabama to Dr. George W. Price and Elizabeth Pooser Price of South Carolina. Edwin and his siblings were educated by their father, a renowned educator and president of the Huntsville Female College. Edwin attended the Parks Field School in Tuskegee and Alabama Polytechnic in Auburn, Alabama, prior to graduating from Vanderbilt Law School in Nashville, Tennessee, in 1880, when the family resided in Nashville. Edwin's father was an influential Nashville leader and served as president of the Nashville College for Young Ladies and was a professor of physiology at Vanderbilt Medical School.
Biographical or Historical Data
Price served as City Attorney of Nashville in the late 1890s during the legal battles between the railroads and streetcar companies regarding the franchises and rights of way. Ca. 1902 Price was elected Attorney General for Davidson County, serving in this public office until 1906, when he resigned to establish a private firm, Price, Schlater, and Price, with his son Edwin Price, Jr. He remained active in the Tennessee and Nashville Bar Associations, and was also a member of a number of fraternal organizations and clubs, including the Knights of Pythius, Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks, the Erskine Club, Hermitage Society, and Nashville Board of Trade. Price was a well-known orator and was chosen to introduce President Taft at his reception at the Ryman Auditorium during his visit to Nashville in 1911. Edwin A Price died of a heart attack at his law office on October 5, 1933, and was survived by his wife, three sons and a daughter.
