Description
Scope and content: A wide variety of material relating to the military service and wartime experiences of military personnel and civilians; monuments, preservation, and commemorations, especially for the Battle of Nashville and the Civil War; unit histories; veterans' reunions, activities, and publications; newsletters, especially relating to local airbases during World War II; and women's involvement in wartime, especially the Civil War and World War II. A number of tourist brochures to historic sites are also part of the collection. Other formats include letters, memoirs, diaries, essays, brochures, pamphlets, and a variety of other written materials, including some photocopies. Series level descriptions follow. Many items in all series are undated, so there may be other materials which pre- or post-date the time periods reflected below. See detailed container list for more information on the nature of materials and dates.

War of 1812, (2012): Driving tour brochure of War of 1812 sites in Tennessee, produced for the war's bicentennial in 2012.

Indian Wars, 1981: Items relating to Andrew Jackson's battle against the Creek Indians at Horseshoe Bend, Ala.

Civil War, 1862-1999: Includes items relating to the battles of Chickamauga/ Chattanooga; Fort Donelson; the Great Locomotive Chase; Hood's Campaign, including Franklin and Nashville; Parker's Crossroads; Shiloh; and Stones River, including personal accounts, letters, correspondence, narratives and essays. Information also concerns battlefield parks; commemorative activities, including the 1964 Civil War Centennial and 2014 Sesquicentennial observances of the battles of Nashville and Franklin; preservation efforts; tourist brochures; and monuments at Gettysburg and in Nashville. Information about civilian life in Nashville during the Federal occupation, including women's experiences and the activities of the Union provost marshal against "disloyal" citizens are also included, as is information about Fort Negley. A variety of personal accounts written by eyewitnesses to events throughout the war and in various locations are available in the form of letters, diaries, memoirs, and similar items, and represent civilians and soldiers, both Union and Confederate. Unit histories also form part of the collection.

Researchers are advised that materials for the Battles of Nashville and Franklin will often be listed under the broader heading of "Hood's Campaign," since many times the campaign as a whole is discussed rather than each individual battle. Researchers are especially encouraged to consult the individual contents list in the finding aid for more information.
