Description
Abstract: Includes a wide variety of material relating to schools in the Nashville area and elsewhere in Middle Tennessee. Most items outside of the Nashville area concern universities or colleges. In the collection as a whole, all types of schools are included, both public and private, and elementary, secondary, and post-secondary institutions. Materials are also included which concern or originate with school-affiliated groups and individuals, such as clubs, athletics, parent-teacher organizations, teachers, administrators, alumni, and others.
Description
Scope and content: Includes programs from school events such as graduations, reunions, plays, recitals, concerts and similar activities; promotional materials; yearbooks; rosters; brochures; student newspapers; literary magazines; newsletters; publications; reports; essays and histories; course catalogs; student handbooks; curricula and lessons; speeches, commemorations, and dedications; and a wide variety of other material. Quantity of materials ranges from a single item to several folders. Some items are photocopies.
Description
Some of the more notable material includes broadsides from the Nashville Female Academy in 1859 promoting their exhibition; a 1908 Senate document regarding claims for damages at the University of Nashville Medical School caused by U.S. troops during the Civil War; and a slate lesson book used by a student at Bowen School. Two items relating to Vanderbilt University are worth special mention: a program for President John F. Kennedy's speech in 1963 commemorating the 90th anniversary of Vanderbilt University, and a brochure issued during the Tennessee Centennial Exposition in 1897, offering Vanderbilt dormitories as lodgings for visitors to the exhibition. Other items in the collection include a history of girls private schools in Nashville written by Margaret Lindsley Warden in 1965; a list of high school examination questions from 1922; and a newspaper from 1979 entitled, "Speak to the Chaperones," containing women's reminiscences about their school days in Nashville in the mid-1940s, including memories of high school sororities, dances, and social life.
Description
A number of small holdings exist for girls and women's schools, and numerous private academies for both sexes. Individual schools that are well-represented in the collection include: Aquinas College; Belmont University; Bowen School; Isaac Litton School; Peabody College and Peabody Demonstration School; Scarritt-Bennett Center; University of Nashville, including the Medical School; Vanderbilt University; and Ward-Belmont, including their Camp Cohechee in Fryeburg, Maine.
